Everyone Thinks They Understand Nutrition. Why?

Because they eat. They learn about what feels good and what feels bad to them. But, that has very little to do with nutrition. Most physicians know next to nothing about nutrition sensing pathways and nutrient biochemistry. Why? It isn’t taught in medical school. If your doctor knows nutrition it’s because he sought out education after medical school. The little I learned about nutrition was taught by surgeons. What? Yes. Surgeons. Why? Surgeons are in the business of causing wounds and therefore are in the business of healing. Surgeons directed post-operative nutrition for hospitalized patients. Empiric observations related to delayed or incomplete healing were eventually corrected with deficiencies of macronutrients such as essential amino acids, proteins, and fatty acids in fats. An essential nutrient is something the body can’t make by itself. It has to be taken in through nutrition. How can you help someone heal who can’t eat? You have to feed them directly by pumping it into their gut with tubes or directly by IV into the veins.
